Popular in many South Asian kitchens, this dish is known for its bold aroma, layered spices, and satisfying texture. It is a perfect example of how simple pantry staples can transform into a hearty, flavor-packed meal.
The combination of tender beans and dry fish creates a unique balance of taste. This curry is often enjoyed with steamed rice, making it a wholesome and filling option for lunch or dinner.

It carries a nostalgic warmth, often reminding people of family meals and traditional recipes passed down through generations. Its bold flavor profile makes it stand out among everyday vegetable curries, offering something both nutritious and exciting.

Beans are an excellent source of plant-based protein, fiber, and essential vitamins, while dried fish contributes additional protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and minerals like calcium and iron. Course: Blog, Vegetables RecipeBeans and Dry Fish Curry is a flavorful, protein-rich traditional dish combining fresh beans and dried fish in a bold, aromatic curry. This healthy homemade curry is perfect for those who love authentic South Asian flavors and nutritious comfort food.
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons cooking oil
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1 cup chopped onion
3 whole dried chilies
300 g dry fish (cleaned and washed)
Salt to taste
1 teaspoon garlic paste
1 teaspoon ginger paste
Water as needed
1 teaspoon turmeric powder
1½ teaspoons red chili powder
1 tomato, sliced
1 small potato, cut into small pieces
250 g beans, washed and cut
Water for boiling (as needed)
Fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Directions
- First, take the beans. In Bangla, we also call them “beans.” Clean them properly, wash well, and keep them in a sieve to drain excess water.
Next, take the dry fish. As shown in my other video, first cut it into small pieces. Wash it with hot water and soak for about 5 minutes. After that, clean it again and keep it aside.
Now prepare the vegetables. Chop the onion and garlic. Take 2 green chilies. Slice the tomato nicely into pieces. Also, chop fresh coriander leaves and keep them ready.
Now it’s time to start cooking. Take a pan and heat it. Add cooking oil (you can use any type of oil you prefer). Once the oil is warm, add the chopped garlic, onion, and green chilies. Fry them well.
Then add the dry fish. Add salt according to your taste and mix everything well. Let it fry for about 5 minutes.
After that, add 1 teaspoon of garlic paste and 1 teaspoon of ginger paste. Fry nicely for about 1 minute on low heat.
Now add the spices. Add turmeric powder and red chili powder. If needed, you can add a little water to help the spices mix well.
Next, add the sliced tomato. Then add the potatoes (cut into small cube pieces). Mix everything well and cook until the potatoes are half done. This will take about 5 minutes.
Now add the beans. Mix everything well. Add a little water so the vegetables cook properly. Since this is a dry curry, do not add too much water. Let the ingredients absorb the water as they cook.
Cover with a lid and cook until everything is nicely done.
Before serving, add chopped coriander leaves for garnish.
That’s it. Your cooking is finished and ready to serve.
